Postdoc: CGE models for a Circular Economy
Postdoc position at Economics Department, TiSEM, Tilburg University
Topic: CGE models for a Circular Economy
Supervisor: Prof. Reyer Gerlagh
Duration: minimal 24 months fulltime. Extensions conditional on teaching preferences
Start: asap
Status: vacancy almost surely to open before May 2023
Circular Economy (CE) principles are geared to reduce environmentally harmful resource extraction, waste, and pollution. Extraction and processing of minerals is energy intensive; a CE strategy thus aligns with climate goals. This is the focus of the CIRCOMOD project, run by a large EU consortium with a team of more than 30 researchers from several renowned universities and institutes in Europe, and from different research fields (economics, industrial ecology, system dynamics, policy assessment).
The Tilburg University team develops a Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model to be extended with features essential to the analysis of the CE. The model must integrate material balances for stocks and flows, secondary markets, vintages, and so-called recycling strategies. A first draft description of the CGE+CE model is available here. Based on methods developed at TiU, the partner institutes will develop large-scale CGE+CE models for simulations to assess CE policies.
The postdoc will work in collaboration with the supervisor Reyer Gerlagh, post-doc Etienne Lorang, senior researcher Asel Doranova, and colleagues from the other institutes. The applicant needs the following skills and background:
– Understanding of theories and empirics of modern economic growth theory;
– Proven interest in environmental economics;
– Proven quantitative skills, specifically complex coding in python, R or matlab;
– Willingness to become fluent in python.
