PhD position in urban and energy economics

The laboratory TREE, specializing in environmental and energy transitions, is seeking to hire a PhD student in the fields of urban economics and energy use to work at the University of Pau (with the possibility of remote work).

Areas of particular interest for this PhD project include: (i) the mechanisms by which the shape and type of cities, as well as their positions and specializations within the urban network, affect their energy consumption; (ii) how changes in the labor market that affect the urban life (e.g., working from home) impact energy use; (iii) the role of cities in the fight against climate change. We are also open to other proposals from the PhD candidate to develop original ideas at the intersection of urban economics and energy efficiency.

We are seeking a candidate with a strong interest in quantitative data analysis, programming skills, and experience with software such as Stata, R, or Python. The candidate should also possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, capable of effectively conveying complex technical information in a clear and accurate manner to diverse audiences.

A three-year, full-time fixed-term contract is offered. Proficiency in French as a working language is not required. Initial experience as a research assistant would be appreciated, but not mandatory. The PhD student will be supervised by Fabien Candau and Camille Massié. The thesis will start by the end of 2024, i.e., November/December.
